Before the track fully unfolds, you’ll trip over your tongue and shout “product of Portishead!” Who could blame you? Windsor’s Perilelle lyrical range and dark, industrial take on heavily hip-hop infused, Björk-esque beat backdrops don’t fall far from the genre Portishead helped put on the back (along with the likes of Sneaker Pimps and Massive Attack). But what truly separates Perilelle from the thick sea of imitators is her distinct vocals — Perilelle, a vocalist much more akin to Ella Fitzgerald than her generational predecessors. On Sinistarr’s haunting drum & bass remix of “Damages,” Perilelle’s commanding yet desperate vocals are given a distinct quiver that, while painted over raw electronics, remains oddly human — one of Perilelle’s talented assets granted to the Bureau

Original Detroit Grand Pubah, Andy Toth dons his EXB fedora with a dark, sexy feather on this purely original and highly addictive, panty-dropping, Minimal Techno/R&B masterpiece. On “Thrillseekers,” Billy Love’s pivot-and-punch delivery is crystallized in one solid track with a sexed-up recollection of the New Dance show era in 1980’s Detroit. Packaged with a trio of remixes, this EP’s diversity is clearly evident. The light switch is turned off on the “Michigan Left Demix”, resulting in a darker, straight-to-the-point, bare bones rendition. On Midnite Jackers’ take on the track, it’s quite the contrary — this extended house mix floors the mind with in-your-face delivery and radio static confusion (of the most entertaining sort). The legendary DJ Godfather rounds out the pack, transforming “Thrillseekers” into electro grime.

Tracks & Fields – Get Set! (exclusively at stompy)

tracksandfieldsgetset400

Don’t think exercise, think raw adrenaline coursing through your veins, miraculously finding the exit after zipping through anatomical frame for over twenty minutes and leaving you flat on your face, wondering where your car keys are (and, more importantly, your sanity). That’s basically Tracks & Fields debut EP, “Get Set.” On the introductory track, you are honestly handed “The Gift” — a bass-drenched exploration that sounds just as fitting thumping through speakers as it does chasing you through an abandoned house in what can only be described as the ultimate horror flick soundtrack come alive. “Living Wrong” arrives strong and confident, overdosed with funk undertones … but still covered in Tracks & Fields manic, energized sound. “Neck To It” is the quickest hit of the release, coming in at just over four minutes and therefore packed with the most character — equally fitting in the world of hip-hop and video game soundtracks at the exact same time. Midnite Jackers once again make their mark on the remix, repackaging “The Gift” as something a bit more traveling than chasing, erasing any cinematic flavor with lush layers of broken electronics.

Vancouver-based Blacktop plays a pivotal role in the Exchange Bureau line-up of recording artists simply by bringing the funk. Otherwise known as Aklimatize, Blacktop’s space age, funk-fueled, bass-heavy dance tracks enlighten the audience to the wide range of flavors Exchange Bureau is serving up by connecting artists from around the globe and engaging them through the sweet decibels of Detroit music. On “Reversed,” with the help of Stockholm-based Amalia, Blacktop’s board work takes on a life of it’s own … recalling the blaxploitation soundtracks of the ‘70s while ripping a page out of Blackalicious’ World of Vibrations book. The set of remixes that follow only add to the equation. Sweden’s Opolopo transports you via DeLorean to 1982 Disco Boogie bliss, Detroit-based John Arnold’s dirtier dub cut and the almost Latin-flavored “Moot Zoo Dub” uncover the sexual lyrics hidden within.

With reverence to the past and keen foresight, Ibex displays his minimalist precision on this quartet of tracks — the aggressively romantic ‘Panacea’, the commanding ‘Soul Mate’, the sleepily authoritative ‘Phoenix’ and passionately lush ‘Eden’. The first taste of ‘Eden’s’ forbidden fruit is the delicious ‘Panacea’ while ‘Soul Mate’ wastes no time making its presence known, choosing to bring a full-frontal attack on the senses rather than slowly approaching the dizzying, orchestrated climax. ‘Phoenix’ bridges the gap with banishing bass and forgiving oscillations before ‘Eden’ sets the atmosphere with relentless drums, bouncing synths and a rich array of percussion that rounds out this garden.

DIAL81-FUNKY CANDIDATE_400

Where “City Life Swagger” is void of Dial 81’s slick positive poetry, the voice of this jazz-injected instrumental speaks up, slicing six-string samples between two R&B-based bookends of thumping space age sensuality — an instrumental track that simply doesn’t rest. Flash-forward to “Funky Candidate” — the politically charged rendezvous of Chromeo’s synth nostalgia and Beans’ mind shattering delivery as seen through Detroit’s Dial 81. Built around an infectious hook and stacked with social substance, Dial 81’s revolutionary take on political corruption in his own hometown (and beyond) speaks to even the most patriotic … while not boring a single soul on the dance floor. On FURS officially commissioned remix of “Funky Candidate” for Exchange Bureau, FURS brings his uncanny ability to mix-and-match, mish-and-mash to center stage with ease.
